I was obsessed with anything sour during the first trimester with my son. After spending way too much money on Fruit Riot frozen sour grapes, I decided to try making my own at home.

Since then, these sour grape candies have become one of my favourite snacks. The sweet/sour flavor and crunchy texture really wakes up your senses and makes for a great afternoon pick-me-up.

Why You’ll Love These Frozen Sour Grapes

  • Lower effort. Made with minimal ingredients and requires very little prep time.
  • Healthier dopamine snack. A fun alternative to candy when you’re craving something sweet and sour. The flavours and texture offer sensory stimulation that can help give you a dopamine boost.
  • Great for the whole family. Adults and kids will both love these frozen grapes. For younger kids, you can adjust how sour they are and slice them lengthwise or in quarters before serving.

Ingredients & Substitutions

What You’ll Need

  • Grapes: Seedless grapes work best. I like using green grapes for the classic sour candy vibe, but red grapes and black grapes work well too. You can also try out this recipe with other types of fruit, like pineapple, berries, or my personal favorite, mango.
  • Lime juice: Helps the sugar mixture stick to the grapes while adding extra sour flavor. You can also use lemon juice instead.
  • Granulated sugar: Gives these frozen grapes that candy-like coating. You can also use monk fruit sweetener if you’d like to reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe.
  • Citric acid: Optional, but highly recommended. This is what gives sour candies their intense sour flavor. You can find this online or at most bulk and health food stores.

Dietary Variations

  • Lower Sugar: If you want to reduce the amount of sugar in this recipe, you can use monk fruit sweetener instead of granulated sugar. But it is important to use sugar or a sweet substitute to balance out the sour flavor.

FAQs

Do I need to use citric acid?

No, but it really helps create that sour candy flavor. Without it, the grapes will taste sweeter and less tart.

What type of grapes work best?

Seedless grapes work best. Fresh green grapes tend to give the most classic sour flavor, but red grapes and black grapes also work well.

Can I use jello powder instead of citric acid?

Yes. Some people use jello powder instead of sugar and citric acid. However, I wanted this recipe to be dye-free.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes. These store well in the freezer, making them a great healthy snack to keep on hand for when your next sour candy craving hits.
